Name: DAVID JONES CommentsMY WIFE CAUGHT HER VERY FIRST SHAD THIS SATURDAY JUNE 20TH!!!!THATS RIGHT I SAID JUNE 20TH.WE WERE FISHING SPINNERS FOR TROUT WHEN SHE CAUGHT,LANDED AND RELEASED A BIG BEAUTIFUL FEMALE. I HAVE SEEN DOZENS OF SHAD IN THE RIVER WATER THE LAST 2 WEEKS BUT COULDNT BUY A STRIKE[FROM A SHAD] BUT MY WIFE PROVED TO ME ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN AND THAT SHAD CAN BE CAUGHT AS LATE AS JUNE 20TH. HAPPY FISHING,DAVID JONES
Name: Bruce Komar CommentsI would like to try fishing for Smallys in the Delaware. Can anyone give me advice on the best areas up or down from Dingmans and how to fish for them. I'm a new member and found the advice from you guys has been great! THANKS
Name: Riverwolf CommentsThe reason the shad are in the shallow fast water is "Oxygen". The river has been in the 70's for the last week. These fish have a hard time with water this warm. Think about where they spend most of their lives, in water 50-60. These fish are getting extremely stressed in this warm water. Fished Easton Monday picked up 2 shad, 1 walleye and 2 smallmouth. I quit early because of the heat. I was expecting to see some dead fish from spawning and the warm water. Did not see a single dead shad. We need some cool rain to give these fish a lift before they die, before they get a chance to spawn. I wonder how this warm water will effect the egg hatches. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Tight lines
Name: Fisherman-Dan CommentsWhat a difference a week made. Fished from2:30 untill 7pm. Caught 5 all in the last hour. They where all in fast water at Buck island. Last shad outing this year.
Name: Jack Harris CommentsTom W. - don't expect shad caught at Eshback or Worthington to show up at Dingman's. Although I'm probably done shad fishing for the year, I used to fish faithfully right up to Mem Day weekend, and can tell you that when water warms (as it is), the fish stop migrating and "hole up". You need to move and find them. I have had much success in waders and in boat years back, by finding them in faster water, just above or below drop-offs. I have stood on a "bar" in swift knee deep water and watched the shad take my dart. I have also caught them in classic cast and drift fishing in many different spots where the river narrows and rapids form. There are at least three spots on the Jersey side within 3 miles south of dingman's you can drive to that I can think of. One you can stand right on a rock and cast out and they hit as soon as your line starts to straighten out. When you find them (stop waiting for them to come to you - they are done migrating) the fishing can be fast and furious or just a pick. Either way it's fun fishing. GOOD LUCK and hope this advice works. I wish I COULD FISH MORE!!!
Name: TOM W. CommentsONE BUCK ON MON, NOTHING YESTERDAY, STILL WAITING FOR ALL THE SHAD BY ISHBACKS AND WORTHINGTON TO GO BY HERE. WILL TRY FOR A FEW MORE DAYS. THANKS FISHERMAN DAN AND SUPERFISHERMAN FOR KEEPING ME HOPEFUL.
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments5/25/10: Fished from 12:30-7:00p.m. GOT NOTHING- NO HITS - NO BUMPS- 2 guys in a boat said they caught 60 by the railroad bridge pilings - they said there were thousands of fish holed up- GOOD LUCK - the season is over for me. See you next season.
Name: Tom W. CommentsSunday afternoon, 5/23/10. Still no luck there. I guess(hope)they will get there soon. I'll keep being on the water waiting for them.
Name: Fisherman-Dan CommentsFished from 2:30 untill 7PM. Water was perfect and as flat as a mirror. Trolled the entire time 26 shad in the boat with 4 misses all on spoons. The best day in twenty years of fishing this area. Thanks Jack used some of your ideas on spoons. Fish where fresh and full of fight. We were the only boat.
Name: Tom W CommentsBelow, at, and above, no shad. Didn't see a thing on the Humminbird. Fished evening, 5-20-10. Looks like they just haven't gotten here in good numbers yet. Will keep trying.
Name: Shadpappy Commentsfish still moving thru in the Easton area, went 8 for 17 today in fast current channels.five roe in the upper 5 and 6 lb. range,,22 to 23.5 inches long, and full of fight and full of eggs,, blk/org and pk/wht #1 spoons in gold or silver worked well..I even had a Walleye that was an easy 10 lbs on for about 20 m inutes before getting off, but had fun with it..prior to launching today ,watched the students from Pohatcong school release there larvae into the Del. wasa very heart warming to see the kids so excited about this program..this is what it's all about..BTW, I thanked them for stocking shad that I will catch in 4,5,6, years from now. Heh Heh.... Pappy
Name: Riverwolf CommentsTwo of us fished at Smithfield Beach today boating 19 of 22 fish on light tackle. What a rush. All fish came from 9:30am - 3:30pm. Didn't have a hit from 7 to 9:30. Water temp 63*. Lots of fish in this part of the river.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsFished Easton today with the PAF&BC officials. My guest went 3 for 4. It was the first time he caught a shad. It seemed like he had a good time. I think everyone caught fish. The first free fishing day is this Saturday 5-22. Take someone fishing that has never caught a shad. Nice to fish with Pappy, Shadster, Dick, Kfir and the gang. Check the website for pics. Water 64*. Tight Lines.
Name: WG CommentsFished a warm tidal tributary of the Delaware this AM with my son. I landed 2 and missed a couple, my son landed 1 then tried for stripers and smallies to no avail....the shad fishing at that spot is getting slow as the fish are spawning. We then went upriver and I caught one shad and my friend Tom landed one shad ABOVE the Fairmount Dam on the Schuylkill River.....That to my knowledge are the first confirmed catches upriver of Fairmount!! We also both had a few more on and some hits too.
Name: WG CommentsI would like to say THANKS to whatever agency CLEANED the DEBRIS from the exit of the fish ladder at the Flatrock Dam on the Schuylkill River....I appreciate the response from the DEP from Terry (cant remember his name) who helped me put the word out!! Thanks again guys!! Its a worthy cause!
Name: Jack Harris Comments5/15 afternoon trip on boat, with 2 kids. Fishing was just "ok". fished from 3:45 to 6:30, and went 9 for 9 which means not a lot of hits but those that came through really wanted the dart. Only one "double" the entire afternoon. Fished at anchor in 7 feet, but it was just a pick with 6 rods in the water. Only rods with no weight and small darts caught the fish, even 1/8 ounce keel sinker was too much. Fish were not on a steady move which seems to indicate the urge to spawn. Water 59. I can now concur with the many reports of smaller fish this year as this is the first I can really say the shad are way undersized. I was catching some 4 - 6lb roe around April 23 mixed in with decent sized bucks, but tonight I was catching 3 lb roe which I dont' ever recall seeing. I kept a 2.5 lb buck "bleeder" for catfish bait and was shocked to cut it up and find roe inside. The roe was still small and orange though which defy's their behavior. Very strange run, I would have thought based on the April fishing I experienced would have been very good in May, but really getting spotty. I should have fished some faster water as I think they are holding in the stronger current with the water flow down and water temps coming up. I need to get into the fly fishing and get back into the waders, but taking the kids is so much easier in the boat...
Name: Richard Fasanello CommentsFly fishing for shad above the gap continues to be good. Average experienced anglers are managing to hook 2 to 8 fish per hour per fly in the water. (Some days are better than others.)
Name: WG CommentsI posted this on Woofish, and wanted to see if anyone knows who can fix this mess.........FISHERY MANAGERS ALERT - The entrance to the fish ladder at the TOP of the Flatrock Dam is completely BLOCKED with debris and wood.....NO SHAD can make it past there even if they got completely through the ladder, they could not exit at the top.....WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAINTENANCE THERE.....I am calling as many agencies as I can, so that the MANY fish that have passed the Fairmount Dam below it, can get farther upriver.......
Name: Bruce Komar CommentsThanks Rich I'll give it a try.I want to go this weekend
Name: Richard Fasanello CommentsTO BRUCE KOMAR; Check the links section for PA river flow data. The temps are given for Callicoon, NY and Trenton, NJ. Not always, but usually, your area to fish will be somewhere in between. More importantly, you can see if a slug of cold and/or high water is coming down from NY. You can also see how the temps fluctuate during the day so you might figure what to expect later in the day. Take into account how much sunlight is expected, and how warm or cool the air temp is forecast to be when doing your calculating. None of this is as exact as actual temperature measurement at your location, but it may help, especially when drastic changes are forthcoming.
Name: Bruce Komar CommentsFished all day on Tuesday. Nothing, should have known better when the water temp had dropped to 50 degrees. Temp was 53 when I left at 3:00. Got to keep trying. Don't get a chance to go that often.Wish I had a way of knowing what the temp of the water is before I go out. I live about an hour from the river
Name: Riverwolf CommentsFished Trenton today for herring and Stripers. Took two hours to find the herring. You had to "hunt" them. By this I mean you had to drift around until you caught one and then drop the hook (anchor). Found them on the incoming tide. Caught 2 Stripers 21 and 23". Caught them on herring heads. Saw a few others of the same size caught by other anglers. The big cows were no where to be found so the live lined herring were left alone. The herring run this year has been sporatic to say the least. Pods of fish here and there but not in the large schools that usually are in by this time of the year. Maybe a little late because of the fluctuating water temps? Air temp at 7am 36*. Water 58* and gin clear.
Name: Fisherman dan CommentsFished fro 2:30 untill 8PM. Caught eight with half on pink and white darts and half on spoons of different colors. only missed one . Marked lots of fish on finder but very slow untill last hour. No other boats and was very cold and windy
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsFished Sandts Eddy Friday after work from 4:30pm-7:30pm and landed 4 Shad. Actually was opposite of Wed when I was out getting the Roe's. These 4 were all SMALL Buck!
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments5/7: Fished from 2:30-7:30p.m. Caught 1 buck at 2:40 on a red & white dart then nothing till 7:00- caught 2 more on green & chartreuse spoon. Fishing was slow but it was a beautiful day watching the eagles. Saw only one other fish caught. However, this appears to be one of the best runs in many, many years.
Name: eyedeau CommentsWe got around 10 today..the bite was spotty but we were able to keep at it with subtle adjustments to the anchor..spoons and darts both worked equally well
Name: Chris Wolfe CommentsI fished from 5:15p.m. until 7:45p.m. and caught 1 buc and 2 roe on green/chartreuse/silver flutter spoons. Was fishing in 15 feet of water and was catching fish at 8 to 10 feet down. Fish are small but it beats not catching anything
Name: WG CommentsFished in a tidal trib of the Delaware this morning, fishing was slower, but I got 14 Americans and 3 hickories, my son got 12 Americans and 1 hickory. Fished from 6AM til 12:30 on the incoming to high tide then outgoing. Got slower as the sun came got higher......Water almost 70 so these fish are going into spawn mode.......As for why the shad are so small, the fish this year are plentiful and all around the same size, with 5 pd roe around the biggest I have caught in hundreds of shad landed. I believe other members will agree with the size and abundance. These fish are all first time spawners. IF they can survive bvack to the ocean and respawn, we could see some larger fshad in the future,. However, as survivability of the shad in the past 15-20 years after the spawn has been stopped by the overabundant stripers in the east coast rivers....bottom line, No repeat spawners = no larger fish. Regardless, I think we should all be happy with the size of this years run.
Name: shaddy mic shadmore CommentsShaddy and Mrs. Shaddy had a gret night fishing. we landed a total of 10 and lost a few. Got them on a mix of sliver and gold spoons and one on a hot pink dart at the end of the night. Fishing is great!!! Catch and release with care!!
Name: the best there ever was and always will be Commentsthe best fishing in the past 15 years but still no fish bigger than 6lbs. can someone explain or theorize this
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsGot back out yesterday 1st time since the tournament from 4:30pm-8pm. Fish with my buddy Shawn and his son Justin and we boated 13 Shad with most of them being Roe! Water temp was way up since last week and read 61.8 on my fishfinder. I actually had on probably my biggest Shad ever as he was taking off a lot of line then sitting only to get off after 5 minutes. I continue to add to my best EVER year of Shad fishing with me landing 130 Shad and having 183 Shad landed in my boat. Fish are still running good in Easton and I'll be back out this Friday. All Shad were caught on Spoons with the most on a chartruse and green spoon
Name: shaddy mic shadmore Comments5-4 Shaddy and company had a great night. The shad were bitting steady from 5:00 till 7:00pm we landed 15 and lost another 5 they were biting gold spoons the best but silver and yellow was also working.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsMade a trip to Trenton today for some Striper fishing. The herring were few and far between today. Took 1.5 hrs to get 6 herring. Thought the striper fishing would be good due to the lack of herring in the river. No stripers to be found. Talked to other anglers and they expressed the same thing. Did pick up a shad that we lost at the boat. Pa Fish and Boat Commission were electro shocking up by the bridges and along the Pa side. The Pa side is the shallow flats. Looked like they were netting some kind of small fish. Does anyone from the Pa Fish & Boat monitor this site? Curious what they were netting. Note: ONLY 6 BOATS on the river. Rain stopped around 8 am
Name: Jack Harris CommentsGreat recipe for shad roe. I don't promote keeping roe "on purpose" but if you get a bleeder (when they suck the dart or spoon or fly down into gills), carefully extract the roe sacs, rinse and chill before you get home. Rinse again with cold water and marinate for a day or two in KC Masterpiece Honey Teriyaki sauce. Lightly saute in butter or smart balance until starts turning white. Cover pan for first few minutes on each side. Uncover, and finish saute until slightly brown on each side - but don't overcook. Serve with rice - DELICIOUS. Just had it tonight for first time this year since I got my first bleeder. Scale the rest of your shad, remove tail and head, cut body in half and freeze for catfish bait. Thaw out when ready to fish and cut into 1x3" strips. Shad is the best catfish bait - hands down. Catch and gently release all that you can!
Name: Chris Wolfe CommentsFished Fri evening from 5pm to 7:30pm and only caught 1 buc. Fished Sunday for 6 hours had 4 hook ups and landed 3 bucs; also caught a small mouth bass.
Name: eyedeau CommentsWe continue to catch shad in the lewis's nets..about 15 on saturday 5/1..mostly buck some trout and gizzards mixed in too
Name: Jack Harris CommentsActually got to go for a few hours this morning. Dropped anchor at 6, marked fish but no hits. Moved boat at 6:15 and started hooking up but only 1/2 the action of yesterday. Landed 9, hooked and lost about 6 others. Action over by 7:30. River 55 degrees when started, 56 when left. Thats a 5 degree rise from Saturday morning. Most fish today were 4lb roe.... Saw two other boats, one caught a few as we left.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsFished Reigelsville today 17 hook ups 14 in the boat. Large spoons(#3) working the best. Dipsey divers working very well. Water tenp 60*. Lots of fish this week all small.
Name: Dave Bittner CommentsWhat a beautiful day to be at the river! Caught 5-- four bucks and one roe, all normal sizes. Lost one. Used flutter spoon.
Name: shaddy mic shadmore CommentsShaddy and Company went fishin' tonight and only landed one nice roe. fished from 6:00pm to 7:45 boats out in the same area got about 6-7 in the same time... I guess Shaddy needs a boat.
Name: Jack Harris CommentsToo bad only time I can get out this weekend was this morning because there are a TON of fish in the river. Dropped anchor at 6:15 AM and got a quick 4 rods in but within seconds had a triple and it was as fast and furious as shad fishing can be for a solid hour and a half, with several more triples and many doubles. Probably boated about 16 in that first hour and half, with many others falling off. Next hour got spotty with maybe 5 more, then trolled the deeper slower water and marked many fish but only managed one more. I guess total landed was around 22 but the pace at first light was rediculous. 1/2 the fish were roes including a 6.5lb landed by Bill Farese of Fredon (today was the first day he ever caught shad and he got a great into...) River 51 degrees, a little high, a little stained but very fishable. Amazingly, I did not see anyone else shad fishing. Back in the 80 to mid-90s there would have been 20 boats... People don't know what they are missing.
Name: Tom W. CommentsFished for about 1 hour on Fri 4-30 around 3pm, caught one buck Shad. Noticed other boats were catching also. A good number of nets going down. It was a good day.
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN CommentsTo- "Curious" - I am only kidding- I have fished backed in the 1980's in that same spot practically elbow to elbow with shad fisherman during the run and everybody caught- I, in fact prefer to have people around- it is sort of psychological protection and sanity from constantly checking my surroundings for BEAR- think I'm kidding - I'm not. Also. having others gives you someone to talk to. And, fisherman are rarely rude.
Name: curious CommentsJust wondering how close the "crowd" was that encroached on Superfisherman's spot was? I think we need more shad fisherman - not less. More to enjoy and respect the renewable resource. If you were blessed to be on the beautiful Delaware on a sunny ( yet windy) day and catching fish - why not share the enjoyment with others? Were they obnoxious? It's a huge river to be shared by all. There can't be just "one" spot to fish on this huge river, and part of the fun is catching them different ways, in different spots. If you enjoy reporting your success, why not enjoy it in the view of others? I don't get it. If they were rude and got shoulder to shoulder with you - I perfectly understand. Good luck and keep fishing - don't let others spoil your day! I would rather be fishing than working so don't take it for granted! Enjoy catching that 6lb + roe, from what I've seen fish that size haven't been prevalent so far - but the numbers are great.
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments4/29: Just a postscript: Toatl caught was 5- and all were on red & white darts.
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments4/29: fished from 12:45-5:15p.m. Caught 4 from 1:00-2:30 - 3 roe; 1 buck. Then it was dead- caught the last at 4:45 - a big roe - 6lbs ++. Then 4 guys showed up in my spot and I left. Don't enjoy crowds.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsFished the last two days at Smithfield Beach. Caught 11 on Tues. and 9 Wed. Lost about 4 or 5. Water is clear but on the high side. Full of debris from the trees. Very w----.
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments4/28: Fished from 8-10:30 a.m. Caught 3- 2 roe - 1 buck. All on Green and Chartreuse spoons. Will be back tomorrow- it was just a little too cold and windy as the morning progressed.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsFished 10-6 today picking up 12 shad and a 15" Striper. Most of the shad caught were on flatlines while jigging.
Name: Chris Wolfe CommentsFished Sat 4/24 and had 9 hits and landed 6, 5 buc and 1 roe. Caught all on pink/white/silver flutter spoons. Fishing in 14 feet of water down 4 feet off bottom.
Name: Rusty Balls CommentsFished Easton saturday, morning was hot around noon action slowed down a bit...25 lost 7..not a bad day for the 1st day of the tournament...stay safe on the river...Balls
Name: Jack Harris CommentsI had a friend ask me how I do it as he has been wanting to find Shad success for years. Even though I'm lucky to just get out once a week anymore, I fished 5 times a week for shad back in the glorious 80's and 90's and I have not changed methods at all (just boats). I am not claiming to be the best and I don't really care - I enjoy it and love helping others so I I will share my advice for those that are looking for helpful tips so here it goes - I don't own downriggers yet. I use keel sinkers to adjust my spread. Yesderday the 1/8 ounce size was hot, with just a short 30 foot cast. I also kept a few in close on a 1/4 ounce sinker as well. This helps avoid tangles. (as water rises so does the weight I use but same exact concept). If i am fishing 5 or 6 rods I will vary the weight on every other rod starting with my lightest weight on my longest 7 foot rods, furthest distance from boat. As I work the rods toward center I will mix in a few heavier weights with the line sometimes within visual distance of 6 feet but just a foot or two off bottom. When spotting conditions are right I often watch them strike. I am faithful to my small darts, and have little use for spoons although many do well especially further south around Easton. What happens on anchor is generally the lines further back get hit first, and as you start fighing that fish the next thing you know the short line will get hit... Yesterday was too frenetic at times with 3 on at once, so with just two of us i had one in hand, one in holder, and trying to real in the other two or 3 lines to avoid them getting hit. Surprisingly I only had one bad tangle where I had one break off during a triple. When the fish are there and you aren't catching them I would list the following most common mistakes. a) You just aren't in the right slot, which sometimes is no wider than 6 - 10 feet where the main body is moving through that day (and that varies on river current and depth). As flow reduces you need to get closer toward the main flow, but as flow rises and main flow increases fish move away from that and that is often why shore fishermen do much better when waters clear after flooding. b) Wrong depth - either you are two close to bottom or two high. You need your dart no less than 1 feet off bottom and 2 feet is probably best all around depth but again it helps to stagger and vary your depth because i do see them coming through at 4 feet off bottom at times. As waters warm fish tend to rise in late afternoon as they get closer to spawn. c) Wrong lure - I believe you can't go small enough, but you need a big enough hook to hook and hold 'em. I custom make my 1/32 ounce darts on a hook that is one size too big for the mold. It calls for size 6 but i put a 4 on them, and this really increases hookups while still giving fish what they hit best - a very small bright dart. Some days color makes a difference where I see flouro-green on charteuse outfishing hot pink/white, but 95% of time I have great success with hot pink head, white body, white tail. Yellow tails have worked on occasion but I don't even tie them anymore because I know what works best where I fish, which is generally 4 - 9 feet of water. Perhaps where others fish in 15- 20+ depths my small darts would not be as effective or as visible to the fish, which is probably why downriggers and spoons work good in those situations. Again - this is based on where I fish, where the river is moderate flow, not extremely deep and generally around pinch points where the river narrow and concentrates fish. If you can find an island where the fish favor one side over the other you can't get better than that.
Name: shaddy mic shadmore CommentsWe went out after work on Saturday and fished from 6:00pm to dark. picked up 5 total and lost 2 caught them on spoons and 1 on a dart. a mix of bucks and roe. A boat off shore from us caught about 6 in half that time.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsSlow start this morning only 6 fish by noon. Then things turned around, ended up with 24 out of 27 hook ups. Left at 6:30 with a double. Water temp 56*
Name: Jack Harris CommentsStarted off with slow pick from 2:45 to 4:30, landed 4 and a few hits but not what I expected. Moved back 30 feet and just a tad more into main channel and got all out blitz rest of way until 6:30. Several triple's on, and doubles were the norm. Two of us probably landed about 28 and lost nearly as many while at anchor. Some small bucks, a 4 lb roe and lost one a little bigger, but mostly nice 3 - 4 lb bucks. Even trolled a another quick 4 on way back to launch, so definitely broke "30" tonight as expected. Conditions were absolutely perfect - clear 55 degree water, river about normal level. Saw a gentleman picking away now and then with spoons but I couldn't get a hit on a spoon so I stuck with my mainstay of 1/32 ounce hot pink & white or hot red & white, both with irradescent white tails. Had to go way down in weight to 1/8 ounce keel sinkers in 7 feet of water. Any more weight and you stick to the bottom. According to fish finder they were running 2 - 3 feet off bottom tonight. Gonna try again in morning if it's not a monsoon. Lesson to all - I started in my favorite "hot spot" but if I hadn't moved that 30 feet I probably would have scratched out about 10 instead of the blitz fishing we ended up with. You have to find the right slot, sometimes that slot is no wider than your boat. TIGHT LINES TO ALL.
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsFished 6:30am-7:45pm. Me and the wife only boated 6 lost a few and missed several. Paul Eisley landed 5 Kyle Hockmen boated 7 and Scott Moser avoided the skunk by landing 1 after 7pm. Had to really work for the fish today and I'm thinking it isn't going to get much better the next 3 days. Hopefully I'm wrong!!!! Good luck to all in the tournament!!!!
Name: Dick CommentsWe picked up 17 today. Most boats had 15-25 except for Capt. Dave who's boat had 75 with one 23 1/2" and 6.17#. Not many 22" fish around so far this year.
Name: Duff CommentsStill dead down here. Haven't caught a shad for two weeks. Lewis Fishery says it has picked up a bit. But I can't find them above there. I see lots of boats out now. Don't see any boat posts so I assume they are doing the same. Waiting on the Lilacs. Duff
Name: Jack Harris CommentsI am glad to see the blog is cleared up of the non-fishing related spam and only contains fishing reports now. I'm not sure if others were seeing the same thing, but that is what I was critical of in an earlier blog. Should be a great day today, I will report catch tonight.
Name: shaddy mic shadmore. Comments4-22 Fished from 4:30pm to dark and got 3 2 on spoons. sliver 1 on dart. bright green
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN CommentsI have been a long time user of the Shad Fisherman's Hotline- this Fishing Log is one of the only ways that Shad fisherman can keep up with the migration of the fish. ONLY HONEST REPORTING should be done so that we can know what is happening- Foe example- the report on 4/23 by the fisherman in easton is most helpful and encouraging- it means that the run is still coming through- and, there will be more fishing at the delaware Water gap. Thank you people for your HONEST AND TRUTHFUL REPORTING.
Name: Jack Harris CommentsI am jealous (but happy to hear) of these great catches being reported, especially around Worthington. Great job and thanks for the reports. I hope to get out north of Bushkill this weekend. I hate when my job interferes with the annual shad run.
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsThe bite is back!! Got the skunk taste out of my mouth! Landed 14 yesterday 4/22/10 from 4pm-8pm. My buddy came out for the last hour and also landed 3. No Roe's all buck. Water was up another couple od degrees and it showed!!!
Name: SUPERFISHERMAN Comments4/19-4/22 - Fished Monday-7:30 a.m.-4:30p.m.; Tuesday-8:30a.m.-12:30p.m., Wednesday- 8:30a.m.-4:00p.m and Thursday-8:30a.m - 1:30p.m. Have not had action like this in many years. Bucks were following roes that were hooked. Fish were braking water. I personally caught and released over 80. Many roe- took home 4 over 6 lbs to eat over those days. Had to have been into another 40-50 fish that were hits and got off. Others fishing in same spot did very well also. Action died when the wind picked up.

Name: Jim CommentsFished out of Smithfield 3pm-7pm 3 for 3 very slow
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsGot out 2 hours yesterday after work and got SKUNKED for the 1st time this year. I had 1 slam down in which I missed the hook set. Water temp came back up 1 1/2 degrees. I'll be back out Thursday after work then for the tournament!
Name: Marty CommentsFished on 4/20 from 4-7 PM. Two other shore fishermen plus one boat - all caught many shad. Best shad fishing here in years.

Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsFished 4-7:30pm landed 1 and turned another. Water temp was down 2 degrees since Sat when I was out last. Talked to 2 other boats and both got Skunked. Hopefully we can get some nice days to get the water temp back up for a better bite!!!
Name: Dick CommentsGot a big SKUNK today.
Name: Marty CommentsSorry for the late report: Fished Pt Jervis from shore on 4/12 - nothing; saw only one shad landed from boat. Spoke to person who said many were cuaght in previous days. Fished on 4/15 from the rock on the NY side about 1 mile north of Lackawaxen - Roebling bridge. Landed about 12 shad in 3 hours! Hope to return tomorrow.
Name: Kfir CommentsNo joy at Frenchtown today, just a lot of wind. Dick Miller landed four after 3:00 PM.
Name: Rich CommentsAm thinking on taking shad fishing/camping trip to Worthington State Park next week. Anyone been fishing that area? and is it a good time to make the trip? Sometimes I'm to early or to late.....Thanks
Name: Chris Bogoly CommentsSat 4/17 landed 4 with 1 being a 22" Roe (2nd of year) I fished 8am-12:15. Funny thing is I only caught the Shad and had hits when the sun popped out. No hits at all under the overcast. Buddy of mine went out yeaterday in the same area and got skunked for the 1st time his year. I'm heading out after work today and hope things have changed since yesterday. I have 64 Shad for the year and is my best total ever. Last year I had 63 for the year and only 2 by 4/19/09. Also,I've been very lucky as all were released with no injuries!!
Name: Rock CommentsFished Lumberville (Wading) from 6:30 to 11:30am, did not catch anything. Water temp was 53 and extremely windy. Rock
Name: Jack Harris CommentsFished 4/17 between 1:30 and 3:30. Marked a lot of fish. River dropped a bit and ran clear with little debris despite rain. Water temp 49 degrees. A few hits, landed one small buck. Brutally cold. I should have known batter as I have never caught shad or any other fish on the leading edge of a cold front. I believe its the change in pressure more than the temperature. I caught shad well last wednesday morning in 47 degree water and 37 degree air - yet with a warming sunny day ahead. I'm sure others can confirm this. I would like to know if anyone found "hot" action yesterday (saturday 4/17).
Name: Jack Harris CommentsThe idiots that are filling this blog with non-sensical junk need to please get a life. This blog is intended for the fraternity of dedicated shad fishermen. Hopefully maturity will prevail.
Name: frogmamap CommentsFished yesterday up river from 8am to 5 pm. Caught 7 shad. 2 nice roe to take home to eat.Caught all on down riggers. They would not hit a long line without riggers.Water still a little high.
Name: Haftafish CommentsFished last night. 5:30 till 7:30 pm. I was fly fishing using pink flies with dumbbell eyes. 300grn sink tip line.I landed 8 shad and and lost 4. Missed just as many hits. All shad were bucks about 2 to 4 lbs. There were two guys fishing spin gear with no luck. I guess they wanted flies... Good luck and be safe.
Name: Ron Marks CommentsRich Fasanello: Glad to see you are on the River catching Shad. I was sorry to have missed you at the Edison, NJ. Show. Would have been nice to catch up. Maybe you and some of your New Jersey buddies can make it to our Spring meeting April 21 at Se-Wy-Co Firehouse. Be careful on the River Rich, we are not as young as we used to be.
Name: Kfir Comments4/15/10 Frenchtown,NJ. 18 Shad on, landed 15. One nice Roe 22 inchs. All Shad were released. Water temp. 52/54 degrees River in good condition.
Name: Riverwolf CommentsWas out of town on business. This is what I found. On the Conneticut River. I did get a chance to get over to So. Hadley Mass. on Thursday. I found a boat ramp below the dam and was talking to a few fellows you said they have been catching fish for a week. No fish yet in Brattleboro Vt. because the lift isn't operating. They also indicated that the run seems better this year than the last couple of years. Only saw one boat out. Fish lift doesn't start until May 9 (Mothers Day). Go to the lift and get a flower. Would have enjoyed seeing that.
Name: biloutback Commentsfly rodded over a dozen tonight - between 6 and 8 pm - rich it was 1st time out this year ! missed u
Name: Jack Harris CommentsFirst trip of year. 8:00am to 10:30am landed 9 including two 5 lb roe in 47 degree clear water. Linkage pin broke in gear on outboard and had to wade/walk 1.25 miles upstream back to trailer (2.5 hours). OFFSHORE MARINE in Branchville NJ did an outstand job and fixed within 20 minutes. I highly recommend them! Anchored up same spot by 4:30 PM and fished to 6:30 pm. Landed 10 bucks in 50 degree water. Fished 9 - 10 feet of water, hot pink and hot red darts in 1/16 and 1/32 ounce were the trick.
Name: Superfisherman CommentsI am a WADER-shorefisherman- I will never own a boat-too much work. Anyway- fished from 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Caught 18 - all bucks- landed 13 and fought and lost 5. Beautiful day. A person fishing next to me caught 6.
Name: Kfir CommentsFrenchtown: Had 8 in the boat. 4 Roe and 4 Bucks.Had 3 knock offs on down riggers and 3 lost at the boat. River is nice but high, ramp is clean. Dick Miller had 2 very nice Roe.

Red & White darts- red & white, orange & yellow and chartreuse and gold flutter spoons. Fish wre coming through all day.
Name: Richard O'Driscoll CommentsCaught fish continuously for the first fifteen minutes before the action slowed and then stopped. I wound up with five or six on green and yellow shad dart from the shore.

Name: Dick CommentsAs Rusty said we did great today in Easton. Besides him and Shadster, there was another boat there most of the day that also did probably 30 fish, too. If you can get out, now is a good time to do it. Flutter spoons with chartruese and orange in them seemed to work best for us. Good fishing, Dick

Name: Capt. Alex Craig CommentsWell boys, I had a pretty good night tonight, but I had to work for it. Started fishing at 4:00 PM in 56.1 degree water south of Easton. Hooked up within the first 10 casts and after about 5 minutes the fish managed to shake the hook (actually, it came back with shank bent apart a bit). ;-) I then frothed up the water for 2 hours without a bump. However, my persistence paid off. At 6:15 the fish showed up in force and I had steady action until dark. I literally left 'em biting. I managed 5 for 8 with a missed hit or two which isn't bad for a shore fisherman fishing 4# class line. All my fish hit the bottom black head/orange body/orange tail dart except for one which hit the upper green head/chartreuse body/chartruese metal flake tail dart. It was a nice class of fish with all but one going 3 - 4 pounds. And, I know I'm not exaggerating as I put one of the bigger fish on the boga grip and it went a smidge over 4#. I had the whole pool to myself except for a pair of mallards who were interested enough in feeding in the base of a hollowed out tree trunk behind me who warily swim upstream and began a duck feeding frenzy in it. Presumably a bunch of insects were hatching out in the pool of water which had collected in it. After they cleaned it out, they climbed upon the bank in back of me and ate their fill of insects and began preening themselves not two feet from my gear. They stayed there for at least 45 minutes until I finally climbed out of the water after losing my last fish; which I deserved to lose as I had not retied my rig as I should have after 3 long fights with previous shad. Well, it was getting close to dark and I simply didn't want to lose what little fishing time that was left. :-) Life is good!
Name: Richard Fasanello CommentsFished in the vicinity of the Martins Creek Generating Station. Middle of the afternoon, from the riverbank. Used 1/3 oz. darts in chartreuse and in silver (only 1 dart at a time). Both worked well. Fishing time 2 hours and 20 minutes. Landed 9 of 13 hooked, some nice size bucks, only 1 small roe. And had about as many bumps additionally. Could see bottom in about 4 feet of water. Water temp of 51.5 degrees recorded. An unusually excellent day to begin my season, thanks to the unseasonably warm water temps causing the early fish to bite instead of swimming past with lockjaw.
Name: Capt. Alex Craig CommentsG'day Gentlemen, Well, it took me 4 trips, but I finally managed to find them this morning. Fished from 6:45 AM 'til 10:15 AM and went 3 for 3 on a decent class of bucks. It wasn't fast fishing. I landed the first around 8:00 AM, the 2nd around 9:00 AM and the 3rd at 9:45 AM. The first went 2.5# and the 2nd two were 3# each. I was fishing tandem dart rigs (3/16 oz) with black/orange on the bottom and green/chartreuse on the top with orange and chartreuse tails, respectively on 4# class lline. The first two fish hit the black/orange and the third hit the green/chartreuse. The water level was 9.5 feet when I arrived and dropped darn near 6 inches by the time I'd left. The water temp was 52.5 degrees when I started. Also, I forgot to note in my last post that the water temp was 52.3 degrees when I started yesterday (Sunday). The first two fish fought well which is what you'd expect at this time of year. The third came in 'green' which is somewhat unusual with 4# class gear. The release was more spectacular than the fight I let it go and turned back toward the bank to rig a new tail. Two seconds later I heard a smack on the water that sounded like someone had dropped a s small volkswagon in the water 5 feet from where i'd released it. I turne back around to see a huge hole in the water with water spraying everywhere. It made we wonder if a big musky had found brunch! Tempest Sportfishing http://www.Tempest-Sportfishing.com
Name: Rusty Balls CommentsFished Easton this after for about 1 1/2 hrs...got 3 lost 1...fished the lehigh side... delaware still rippin pretty good...another guy fishin next to me had 2 doubles in a row.....wear your pfds..water temp 51 degrees...get out there...the shad are here...only gonna get better as the week goes on...watch the other guys anchor line...make sure you have a good anchor..if u break loose you'll be in philly before u know it
Name: Richard Fasanello
Name: Capt. Dave Fished this afternoon at Easton for 3 hrs and had some of the best early season shad action ever. Landed 6 and lost 2. About 3 of them rocketed at least 3' out of the water when fighting. They were slamming the poles pretty good. Got 4 on flat line and 2 off downrigger. Delaware is still ripping to fast to anchor out in current. Saw a 20' tree and roots float down. Launching and putting the boat back is definately a 2 man job now because of current. Thanks to Capt. Pat for helping me. We had to back the boats down the P'burg ramp because of heavy mud on far side of ramp. Fisher boat had about a dozen while we were there. Caught all on black and orange spoon. Water was 54. A good start to the season.

CommentsLooks like with the rain predicted the next few days the river will rise dramatically. There is a large snow pack up North and in NY. With these rains, we'll probably have some flooding on the Delaware R. This will have a positive effect... the early runners will get a shot to move up river. Fishing will begin in a few weeks.. Get the tackle ready and the spoons shined up and get the boat primed for the river. See you on the water.... Shadillac, DRSFA member & volunteer
CommentsCome join the fun at Calvery Church Souderton this Saturday 10am to 7pm. Babe Winkleman will be the main speaker with other seminars. Stop by our booth and say hi, we can talk shad. I'll be there all day offering tips and places to fish. Next Sunday March 14 our club will be holding our Flea market. Come on out and get some great bargains. Rt 378 just south of Bethlehem. With the snow beginning to melt the PP in Trenton should be heating up in about two weeks. Tight lines

CommentsWas over at the river today and the shad were jumping in the boat. Couldn't keep more than two lines in the water at a time. Greatest day in a long time. Then the ALARM went off DAMN. Who ordered all this snow? Looking to hit the Trenton PP in two or three weeks. Tight lines
Commentsnot long now
CommentsI just got a look at the pictures of the Board. I don't think I need say more. What a bunch. they might not be to handsome, but to a man they get the job done. I wish that there was a picture of Jeremy. He did a great job setting this thing up.
CommentsWe did not make it to Leesport the snow was too deep. I think we could have made a few $$$. We can not afford to miss many of this kind of event. If any readers out there have not been getting our G-Mail and wish to get it, join the Club for $5.00 and get in on the action. We seem to have stirred up a Hornets nest out in the Harrisburg area. I think that they will get over it, I hope.
CommentsWe will have links for River Stages soon. Do not forget the Flea Market. MARCH 14,2010 Call (610) 791-0987. Ralph's Flea Market is 2-6-2010,at Leesport. We will be there if the snow is not to deep.
